Peter is also the Contributing Editor at The Australian newspaper.
Prior to joining The Australian, Peter wrote a regular column for The Bulletin magazine (2007-08). He also wrote a number of opinion columns for publications including; The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, The Australian Financial Review, the Canberra Times and The Courier-Mail.
During this time he also appeared on the Nine Network's Sunday program, where he presented cover stories on Australian politics and provided expert commentary in the lead-up to the federal election.
In early 2011, in addition to his journalistic duties Peter became a Winthrop Professor and Foundation Chair of Journalism at the University of Western Australia. Prior to this he was an Associate Professor in politics and Government at Edith Cowan University where he worked from 2004-2011.
Peter was raised in Sydney's eastern suburbs and attended The Scots College, Bellevue Hill. On graduating he studied a Bachelor of Arts at the University of New South Wales, graduating with first-class honours in Political Science and a Masters in Policy Studies (with Distinction). He then furthered his academic studies at the University of Western Australia where he was awarded his PhD in Political Science.
Prior to commencing his academic career, and while still studying at university, Peter was a Policy Analyst in the non-government sector (2002). He was also on the staff of Tony Abbott when he was Minister for Workplace Relations in the Howard Government ahead of the 2001 election.
Peter is also an accomplished author and has written and edited four books. His best seller John Winston Howard (with Dr Wayne Errington) was rated by the Wall Street Journal Asia as the best biography of 2007. He is currently working on a biography of Kevin Rudd, to be published by Melbourne University Press.
